One Year Later: Tennessee’s Hands-Free Law

Here at Benton White Insurance, we see firsthand what can happen when a driver of a vehicle doesn’t pay full attention to driving.  Vehicle claims that are filed with us show what distracted driving can do.

We have been a supporter of the Tennessee Hands-Free law from its inception.  It requires all of us in Tennessee to concentrate on driving instead of being distracted with a phone call or text.  Some would say this was a great start to a problem that still exists.

What Did the New Law Say?

What were the Results?

The Tennessee Highway Patrol issued more than 12,500 citations to those who violated this law in its first year.  The law survived a couple of attempts at repeal, with some Tennessee lawmakers wanting to get rid of it all together.

The hands-free law bans most cell phone use in the car for drivers, unless the phone can be used wirelessly, with voice command or with a simple touch.

According to data, there was a large drop off in citations in the last four months – due to the coronavirus pandemic keeping commuters at home and off the roads.

Keep in mind, the data is only for THP and does not include tickets issued by local police departments.

We promote vehicle and property safety at Benton White Insurance.  When you see people injured and property destroyed from lack of concentration on the roads firsthand, we want to do all that we can to remind our great customers of the risks.  That call or text on your phone can wait.  It can be life saving to put your phone away when driving so that you can protect yourself and others.
