Should I Turn Off My Water When I Go on Vacation?

Vacation season is right around the corner.  Possibly, you will be out of town for a couple of weeks for a much-needed break. Your neighbor will look after the dog, you will turn off your electrical appliances, and put your mail on hold. But something’s still nagging you: Should you turn off your water when you go on vacation?

The simple answer, according to professional plumbers, is: Yes. Here’s why…

Prevent Flooding

Sure, flooding is unlikely to happen, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Turning off your water supply before you go on vacation will prevent unexpected flooding, which could cost you hundreds (or thousands) of dollars.

Here’s the thing: Even a small leak can flood your home while you’re away, and this can cause a huge amount of damage. Just imagine coming home to find water has damaged all your belongings.

Subsequent damage from this type of water loss would be a covered risk under your home/property insurance policy.  You would have a deductible to pay and a lot of inconvenience while the intensive repair work takes place.  And, it’s not a quick fix because of drying time etc.

Another preventative solution would be to have a professional plumber inspect your household water supply that would help you identify any leaks and prevent water damage in the future.

Save Money

Even if a leak doesn’t cause flooding when you are on vacation, a dripping faucet could add a considerable amount of money onto your next water bill. It’s surprising how much water comes from a leaky faucet!

“It is true that a single drip won’t waste much water but think about each faucet in your home dripping a little bit all day long,” says the USGS Water Science School.

Turning off your water supply before you go away, however, will prevent unexpected costs and save water. It will take you just a few seconds to do this, and it will provide you with peace of mind.

Is it a good idea to turn off the water while on vacation? Yes! Not only will you save money, but you could prevent water damage from a flood and an insurance claim that could be costly.
